Concerts have taken Daniel Dodds to important venues on all inhabited continents—as artistic director of the Festival Strings Lucerne, as a soloist with conductors such as Zubin Mehta, Vladimir Ashkenazy, Oksana Lyniv and Stanley Dodds, and as a chamber musician, documented in numerous live radio and TV recordings. The Hamburg Symphony Orchestra, the Orchestra della Svizzera italiana, the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra, the Brisbane Symphony Orchestra, the Lucerne Symphony Orchestra, the Sophia Philharmonic Orchestra, the Australian World Orchestra and the Festival Strings Lucerne are among the orchestras with which Daniel Dodds has worked as a soloist.
As Artistic Director of the Festival Strings, Daniel Dodds combines the warm expressive sound of the Festival Strings—the hallmark of the Viennese sound tradition of its founders Rudolf Baumgartner and Wolfgang Schneiderhan—together with a nuanced refined sense of style and musical timing to produce music that captivates with its richness of color and drama.
Daniel Dodds has expanded the Festival Strings' repertoire to include performances of works by Beethoven, Mendelssohn, Saint-Saëns, Tchaikovsky, Sibelius, Milhaud, Vasks and Gubaidulina, as well as commissions from Swiss composers such as Luigi Laveglia and Stephan Hodel. Enthusiastic reactions from audiences around the world have led to Daniel Dodds and the Festival Strings Lucerne being the first Swiss orchestra to be invited to the Elbphilharmonie in Hamburg, inaugurating the Giovanni Arvedi Auditorium in Cremona and performing regularly at major festivals such as the Lucerne Festival, Schleswig Holstein Festival, Rheingau Music Festival, Musica Insieme Bologna and Hong Kong Music Festival.
Daniel Dodds regularly appears as concertmaster of the Australian World Orchestra in collaboration with celebrated conductors such as Zubin Mehta, Riccardo Muti, Sir Simon Rattle and Simone Young. Engagements as guest concertmaster include concerts with Camerata Salzburg and Mahler Chamber Orchestra.
As a passionate accompanist and advisor to young musicians and violinists, Daniel Dodds teaches a violin class at the Lucerne School of Music. He also meets and mentors young musicians on tours abroad and during the Festival Strings Lucerne talent week each summer.
Born in Australia to Australian Chinese parents, Daniel Dodds began playing the violin with Alita Larsen at the age of 5. He completed his violin studies with Gunars Larsens in Lucerne, Switzerland, as well as with Keiko Wataya in Utrecht, Holland, and received further inspiration from personalities such as Rudolf Baumgartner, Franco Gulli and Nathan Milstein.
Daniel Dodds plays the Stradivarius "Ex Hämmerle ex Baumgarnter" from 1717, which has been made available to him by the Festival Strings Lucerne Foundation.
